Mastodon è una piattaforma di microblogging e una delle Fediverse's sostituisce Twitter.

Come si sente Mastodon?

Mastodon è molto simile a Twitter.
Puoi scrivere brevi messaggi, aggiungere immagini, video, audo, descrizioni di immagini / video / audio, avvisi sui contenuti e sondaggi.
Puoi @ altre persone sul Fediverse nei tuoi post e inviare messaggi privati.
Puoi utilizzare gli hashtag e trovare post basati sugli hashtag.

Quali sono alcuni vantaggi rispetto a Twitter?

Con Mastodon puoi pubblicare post più lunghi - di solito 500 caratteri, anche se alcune istanze hanno limiti di caratteri ancora più grandi.
Non esiste un algoritmo che decida cosa puoi vedere e cosa no, ma il feed è cronologico e basato su chi segui e su cosa aumentano le persone che segui.
Su Twitter & Co l'algoritmo non ti mostra necessariamente ciò che vuoi vedere, ma amplifica l'odio e le polemiche, per farti guardare gli annunci il più a lungo possibile.
Se hai molti follower su Twitter, aspettati di avere una portata più ristretta su Mastodon, ma le persone che ti seguono di solito sono più felici di interagire con te in modo significativo.

max number of pinned posts (5)

Other limitations:

you can't follow hashtags
you can't edit your posts (only delete and redraft them)

What are Mastodon forks and why use them?

A fork is a derivative software. So Mastodon forks are software based on Mastodon.
They look and feel mostly like Mastodon, but some have some extra features that e.g. address some of the limitations mentioned above.

Ecko

Ecko is a Mastodon fork that has a lot of cool features.
Admins can change the limits on post characters, poll options & profile fields.
So on an Ecko instance you might e.g. have a 5000 character limit for posts and can create polls with 10 options.

Furthermore local posts are possible. Meaning posts only other users of the same instance can see. This might strengthen the community spirit.
