Project 92 aka P92, formerly Barcelona, is the internal name for a software project by Meta (the company behind Facebook, Instagram and more) that is going to be a micro-blogging platform and a Fediverse alternative to Twitter.
While the media praises this as a 'saner version of Twitter', that will eventually replace it, in the Fediverse it is generally considered a bad thing.
There is even a pact for Fediverse admins and mods to block Project 92 and all it's instances. See fedipact.online. According to a poll about 75% of Fediverse users are for blocking P92.

What we know so far

What Meta officially said is that it's "exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates."

Leaks suggest that P92 will:

  • be federating with Instagram and the Fediverse
  • have a character limit of 500
  • look a lot like Twitter
  • be used by prominent people like DJ Slime, Oprah and the Dalai Lama

Apparently Fedizen:Eugen Rochko and Fedizen:Daniel Supernault already had a talk with Meta and signed an NDA.
