For consistency I'd always go with the "I" not "you" perspective in headlines with questions (e.g. "How do I host my own Fediverse instance?" instead of "How to host your own Fediverse instance?").

I User:Paula am thinking about restructuring the Wiki and will write down my vision here.

Main Page

The Main Page should already have a section explaining what the Fediverse is.

Names of articles

I now believe article names should be as simple as possible - ideally one word. So e.g. "Fediverse" instead of "What is the Fediverse?" and "Hosting" instead of "How to host your own Fediverse instance". The old names can however remain as redirects.

Display titles of articles

The title of the article is usually displayed on top as the main headline, but that can be changed. Here I'd go back to the longer version like "What is the Fediverse?". For consistency I'd always go with the "I" not "you" perspective in headlines with questions (e.g. "How do I host my own Fediverse instance?" instead of "How to host your own Fediverse instance?").

To change the display title {{DISPLAYTITLE:xxx}} can be used.

Namespaces

We currently have these custom namespaces on the wiki:

I think we should have these additional namespaces:

  • Draft -> so Drafts are better separated from finished articles
  • Archive -> to also separate disbanded articles from useful ones

Fediverse

The main article of the Wiki should be the one about the Fediverse, currently found at What is the Fediverse?. It should answer the 3 main questions (+sub-questions) about the Fediverse:

  • What is it?
    • What does Fediverse even mean?
    • What is the advantage?
    • Who is it for?
    • What is the Fediverse not?
    • What is not the Fediverse?
  • How do I join?
    • Which server software should I use?
    • Which instance should I join?
    • Can I switch instances later?
    • What client apps should I use?
  • How do I use it?
    • Why is my home timeline empty?
    • Where do I find people to follow?
    • Can I follow hashtags and groups?
    • How can people find my account?
    • How do I set up my profile?
    • What should I post first?
    • What settings should I change?
    • How can I build up my followers?
    • What cool features should I try?
    • What does this feature do?

Categories

The main categories should be the ones with user guides and answer the questions (these are not proposed category names):

  • What is it?
  • How do I join?
  • How do I use it?
  • What else might I want to know?
  • How can I host?
  • How can I moderate?
  • What is this wiki?
  • How can I help (editing, translating)?
  • (Then of course there should be categories for each server software.)

These should be color coded and when you visit an article it should be obvious which category the article belongs to, so you don't e.g. end up on articles about editing this wiki or hosting a Fediverse instance, if you just want to know what the Fediverse even is.

Terminology

In the user guides we might want to switch to terms that people who are not experienced Fediverse users are used to.

  • Fediverse project -> Platform? Server software? Fediverse flavor? Service? Way to experience the Fediverse?

Redirects

There should be redirects for the names of corporate social media platforms and they should lead to a Fediverse equivalent or a list of similar Fediverse services. E.g. Instagram -> Pixelfed, Twitter -> List of Microblogging Services, etc...

Sidebar

The sidebar should have these items:

  • Main page
  • The Fediverse
    • What is it?
    • How do I join?
    • How do I use it?
  • This wiki
    • About
    • Navigation
