Pero, qué significa eso.

Federación

La alegoría al e-mail

Todos sabemos que no necesitamos el mismo proveedor de e-mail para comunicarnos entre nosotros.
Puedes enviar un email de riseup.net a gmail.com y vicecersa.
Así mismo funciona la "federación" en el Fediverso.
Federación significa que diferentes servidores, servidores descentralizados o instancias pueden comunicarse entre sí usando un protocolo.
Tal como el e-mail usa los protocolos POP, IMAP o SMTP para federarse, el Fediverso usa mayoritariamente ActivityPub.

Software Libre

Todo el software usado en el Fediverso es Software Libre.

Software Libre es software que sigue las 4 libertades definidas en Free Software Foundation:

Freedom 0: The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose.
Freedom 1: The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
Freedom 2: The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor.
Freedom 3: The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others. By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

If you yourself can't read or write code, so you can't study, change and distribute the program, you still have some advantages. You can trust the program, because other people studied the code to make sure it does (only) what it's supposed to do. You can request a feature from the developers and if the community deems that feature a good idea it will often be adopted.

The Fediverse runs on donations, not on selling your data, so there are no targeted ads. In fact, there are no ads at all.
What you see on the Fediverse only depends on who you follow, not on algorithms or shadow-banning.
